April 24, 1981 ~ March 20, 2023 (age 41) 41 Years Old

Obituary

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” –Henry David Thoreau

Cody J. Henderhan, 41, of Marietta, left this world far too soon on March 20, 2023. Cody had a lot of loving family and friends and he cared for them, his animals, and the natural world with such passion. His absence in all of our lives will be felt for a long, long time.

Cody was a 1999 graduate of Marietta High School where he was a proud member of the Wall of Sound marching band. He also loved the theater and was involved as a young person with Mid-Ohio Valley Players. He continued to support the arts in his community. A lifelong learner, Cody earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees from The Ohio State University and went on to complete his Master of Arts in Art Education from OSU in 2010.

In 2017, Cody lost his beloved mother, Judith, and moved back to Marietta to help take care of his dad, Mike, who passed away in 2022. Cody’s parents were a huge influence on his life, helping to shape him into the kind and compassionate person he was.

Cody had such a love for nature. He was proud to work with the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County to establish several raised beds for the young people to work in. He was instrumental in the Fort Street Pollinator Habitat and he worked with the Green Sanctuary committee at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Marietta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Judith and Michael, and by grandparents, Charles and Gail Henderhan and Laura Bartmess.

Cody is survived by his younger brother, Zachary, sister-in-law Tekela, and his beautiful nieces Tyesha, Kyla and GracieAnne. He is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and his grandfather, Gale Bartmess. His four-legged friends, Renley, Bob, and Panther, are going to live with Zach and his family and all of Cody’s many plants will find wonderful homes soon.

In keeping with his wishes and his love of the outdoors, Cody will be cremated and his ashes will be spread at his grandfather’s farm. A celebration of life will be held for Cody on April 16 at 3 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta.

Friends are asked to contribute directly to Cody’s family or to the UU Church or the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County. Chandler Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 609 West Street Caldwell, OH 43724 has been entrusted to care for the family.
