Sergis F. Michel

Sergis F. Michel age 89 of Caldwell passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the Genesis Hospice Morrison House in Zanesville OH, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 16, 1925 near Caldwell, a son of the late Edward H. and Kathryn P. Crum Michel.

Sergis served and protected his country in the United States Army during WWII. He served in the 7th Armored Division in Europe. He earned the Purple Heart after being wounded in action during the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed at the former Cleveland Graphite Bronze Plant at its opening in Caldwell. He retired from the later Glacier Vandervell Inc. after 35 years of service in April of 1988. During his service at Cleveland Graphite Bronze he helped organize the Caldwell C.G.B. Employee Credit Union, eventually serving as its Vice President. He later retired from farming in 2011.

Sergis was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell. He enjoyed watching Ohio State University Football and keeping up with the Caldwell Redskins Football Team.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Bertha Yontz Michel whom he married October 30, 1948 and who passed August 13, 1999; 4 brothers Rupert, Regis, Herbert, and John Michel.

Those left to cherish his memory are 1 daughter Linda (Gary) Woytko of Byesville; two sons Gary Michel of Sharon and Tom (Ann) Michel of Caldwell; 6 grandchildren Chris (Richelle) Woytko, Adam (Rebecca) Woytko, Laura (Dan) Gardinsky, Aaron (Angela) Michel, Kelly (Mike) Goodman, and Shawn Michel; 10 great-grandchildren Elijah and Noah Woytko, Ryan, Kyle, and Avery Woytko, Katerina Michel, Elizabeth Gardinsky, Austin, Braxton, and Hartley Goodman. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends will be received Tuesday, December 30, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with a Vigil Service at 8:00 PM at the Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell, with Rev. Father Wayne Morris and Rev. Father Chester Pabin serving as co-celebrants. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Caldwell, with military graveside services conducted by the Noble County Veteran Organizations.
