Sara St. John

Sara Tanner St. John age 96 of Caldwell, OH formerly of Kent, OH passed away peacefully Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Summit Acres Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Caldwell. She was born August 16, 1917 in Wampum, PA a daughter of the late Samuel Smith and Mae Vera Tanner.

Along with her sisters, Sara sang in the Tanner Trio in New Castle, PA for several years. She was a former employee of the Bell Telephone Company. She assisted her husband Fenton in ministry at many churches, located in Guys Mills and Mt. Hope, PA, Port Ewen, Esopus and Rifton, NY, as well as Randolph, Middlefield, Brimfield, Youngstown and Kent, OH. Sara enjoyed spending time reading and was still sharing her gift of playing the piano up until recently.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Rev. Fenton C. St. John whom she married Dec. 27, 1944 and who passed Oct. 15, 2009; 2 sisters.

She was loved and will be missed by her family, a Daughter Kathleen (Tim) Doudna of Caldwell; Two Sons Maynard (Christine) St. John of Wheeling, WV and Marlin (Jean) St. John of Clayton, NC; 11 Grandchildren Eric (Kristen), Raquel (Brad), Tara, Erik, Joe (Jenna), Matthew (Amanda), Lucy, Brandon, Shannon (Daniel), Nicholas and Bryce; 8 Great Grandchildren Jacob, Caleb, Luke, Hannah, Sara, Isaac, Mackenzie, Kaitlyn, Landon and Liam; a sister Vera Mae Ramsey of New Castle, PA; She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends will be received Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church of Kent, 1435 East Main St., Kent, OH 44240. The funeral service will follow visitation at 11:00 AM in the Church with Rev. David Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 PM at the Graceland Cemetery in New Castle, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Hospice of Guernsey Inc., PO Box #1165, Cambridge, OH 43725. Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724 has been entrusted to care for the family.
