Edward V. "Eddie" Chandler age 89, of Caldwell, OH passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at his home under the care of Hospice of Guernsey Inc. He was born June 5, 1925 in Stow, Ohio a son of the late Charles and Jane Moon Chandler.
After seeing his brothers leave to support the World War II he had a sibling sign so he too could serve during the war. He enlisted in the US Navy in June of 1942. He served in the Amphibious Force for the Navy seeing action in North Africa, Sicily and Anzio, Italy. He took part in the Invasion of Okinawa in the Pacific. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952.
Using his knowledge of diesel engines he gained in the Navy, he worked several years as Chief Engineer on tow boats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. He later became the Superintendent for the former Caldwell Electric Plant from 1961 until the Electric Plant was sold to Ohio Power in 1969. He moved on to become the foreman at the Ohio Power Plant in Philo, OH. He retired in December of 1990, after 20 years as the Highway Superintendent for the Noble County Engineer.
Eddie was very involved in his community, as a past superintendent of the Keith United Methodist Church, a 65 year member and Past Master in 1954 of Sharon Lodge #136 F. & A. M. He was a life member of the Caldwell VFW Post #4720 and a past director of Washington Electric cooperative.
He loved live music, many a gathering happened at Eddie and Nellies house with their favorite people blessing them with wonderful music. Eddie will be remembered as a caring loving father, grandfather, friend and boss. Many stories are told about Eddie giving an employee the benefit of the doubt to help them or their families. He loved politics local to national, serving as a President of the Noble County Republican Central Committee. He didnt take long in conversation to realize that he was a conservative and his feelings about the direction of our great nation. If you werent on his email list you probably missed out on some great information over the last couple years.
Eddie was a true patriot always willing to share his experiences in the Navy, attend every Veteran event held in our community. He was one of the first Noble County residents to take the Honor Flight Trip, later assisting many others on setting up there trip. He was featured on an OSU Public Television Special and completed an autobiography of his war experiences that was entered into the National Archives.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant son William Chandler; brother George Chandler killed in France during World War II, brothers Walt and Clyde Chandler; sister Helen Wright, half-brother Richard Davis and half-sister JoAnn Davis.
Those left to cherish his memory, are his wife Nellie Hughes Chandler, whom he married October 24, 1947; 3 sons Phil (Beth) Chandler of Sharon, Steve (Debbie) Chandler of Gilbert, AZ and Bill (Sherry) Chandler of Caldwell; 7 grandchildren Kurt, Stacy, Jason, Bryan, Justin, Adam, Nick; 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends will be received Friday, October 10, 2014 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 609 West Street, Caldwell, Ohio 43724, with a Masonic Service conducted at 7:30 PM. Visitation will also be observed Saturday from 12 until the service time at 2:00 pm. A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Porter officiating. Veteran services conducted by the Noble County Veteran Service Organizations, will conclude services at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at a later date, as Eddies wishes were to further medical science through anatomical donation to Ohio University.
