Doris Marie Meese of Zanesville, OH formerly of Sugarcreek, Ohio went to her heavenly home on Monday, March 13, 2017 at the Morrison House in Zanesville, Ohio. She was 94. Doris was born on Nov. 26, 1922 in Gnadenhutten, OH, the daughter of the late Joseph Gail Dunlap and Florence Edna Dunlap (nee Hasemann). It was a Sunday. Her mother later told her the church bells were ringing.
Doris grew up in the towns and countryside of Tuscarawas County, OH. She graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1940. She briefly enrolled in business college. During the Second World War, while her husband Harold was stationed overseas, she worked in a defense plant in Uhrichsville that made airplane parts. She was literally one of the fabled 'Rosie the Riveters,' or, as she called herself, 'Doris the Riveter.' After the war, like so many women of her generation, she became a stay-at-home Mom who took care of her family. Later, when her sons were nearly grown, she found time to work as a typist and bookkeeper in the insurance and auto-parts fields.
Doris was a wonderful cook. Nothing pleased her more than preparing a meal for family. She made the best pies and cakes, and was particularly known for her butterscotch cookies. She was a skilled knitter, crocheter and seamstress. Her delicately crocheted ornaments adorn many a family Christmas tree. She spent incalculable hours making three exquisite cathedral-window quilts that are nothing less than works of folk art. She was an avid reader and player of word games. She also loved a good game of cards, especially bridge, taking it up in later years online under the handle 'Sugarcreek Doris.' She was a lifelong Democrat. She left behind a handwritten memoir of her life, 'Dory's Story.'
Doris loved to go shopping looking for bargains at Elder Beerman, Sears or JCPenney's. She would go down to Pearl Valley and buy trail bologna and cheese for family and distant relatives. She also loved going out to eat and her favorites were the Pro's Table, Grinders, Der Dutchman and Bob Evans. A fan from the very start of Days of Our Lives and in her later years the Hallmark Channel. Doris lived life to the fullest and cared more for others than herself. She will be truly missed.
She is survived by her sons Jim Meese (Fay) of Zanesville, OH; Gene Meese (Donna) of Truro, NS, Canada; granddaughter Kayla Meese of Independence, OR; grandson Zachary Meese (Tanya) of Lower Sackville, NS; twin great-grandchildren Ainsley Meese and Conner Meese of Lower Sackville, NS. She was predeceased by her husband Harold A. Meese in 2009, after nearly 68 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her brother Herman. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She regularly attended the United Church of Christ in Sugarcreek, Ohio.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no service. The body has been cremated. The ashes will be interred at Evergreen Burial Park New Philadelphia, Ohio alongside those of her husband Harold.
