Donald Vincent Archer, 86, of Caldwell formerly of Circleville, passed away on Wednesday, April 15 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born in East Union, OH on July 15, 1922 a son of the late Ford and Dean Archer. He married his high school sweetheart, Martha Geneva (Wilson) Archer in 1945. Don served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard, was a graduate of The Ohio State University and a member of the Summerfield American Legion Post #415. Growing up on the farmland of Noble County instilled a passion for the land and the environment that he carried into his 33 year career as Pickaway County District Soil Conservationist. After retirement, he continued the work he loved as a surveyor for the Pickaway County Engineer. He often mentored university students studying in the field and treasured the opportunity to teach and pass along his respect for the land to the next generation. He and Geneva made Circleville, Ohio their home for more than 56 years where he was involved in the community as a 4-H advisor and member of the Community United Methodist Church where he served as council president, treasurer, trustee and head of religious education. He and Geneva enjoyed volunteering their time each October to help bake hundreds of pumpkin pies to be sold at the Circleville Pumpkin Show as a church fundraiser. Don was a loving father and grand-father and enjoyed spending time visiting his family in Noble County where he taught them about appreciating the simple things in life like picking raspberries, hunting and enjoying a good rain storm from a front porch rocking chair. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities like sporting events and showing cattle at the Noble County Fair. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leighton Archer and David Archer. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years Geneva Archer; two sons, Tom (Robin) Archer of Summerfield and Don (Michelle) Archer of Summerfield; four grandchildren, Alison (Matthew) Hannahs, Luke (Megan) Archer, Josh Archer and Justin Archer; one great-grandchild, Lane Hannahs; a sister, Mary Evelyn Scott and two brothers, Virgil Archer and William Archer. Family and friends will be received at Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724 on Friday, April 17, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Floyd Costello Officiating. Burial will follow at Eastern Cemetery in Summerfield, where the Noble County Veteran Service Organizations will conduct Military Graveside Services.
