The dearest "nephew-in-law" one could ask for! There's nothing I can say that everyone who knew Joe hasn't already said. But we were so blessed to have him as part of our family and will always remember the smile, the jokes, the laughter and just all around fun times when Joe was in your presence. Message from Sister In-Law Lori
January 27, 2014 1:29 AM

My brother in-law Joe Smith was no average Joe. He was one of the most amazing men that I have ever known.  To know him was to love him.  Our family was so truly blessed when he came into our lives.  I was just a freshman in high school when my sister Louise started dating Joe (and no Joe I’m don’t telling them how very long ago that was lol).  Our family instantly loved him. How do we go on without this amazing man in our lives?  Well although it will be one of the hardest things that we ever do and there will be many tears shed and there’s no one that could ever fill the void, Joe gave us everything we need to survive without him. He taught us to Live, Laugh and Love. He lived his life making us laugh, he made everything memorable. He was such a free spirit. He was fun loving. He gave himself to anyone in need. He made a party more fun (and boy in our younger days there were a lot of those lol thanks Joe! And many of you out there know what I’m talking about.) He made our holiday gathering more fun. Any place he went he made people laugh. He lived his life to the fullest. He lit up the room.  He did not know a stranger. If you bumped into Joe anywhere your day was brighter because he made you laugh. He was so very giving of his time. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. If we needed something or some kind of help who did we call?  We called Joe. And that’s exactly what my children Amanda and Brooke did. If they were in trouble they called their Uncle Joe. Joe would call me and say Lori She’s ok BUT! And it wasn’t that they were afraid of their parents. It’s because Uncle Joe had a way of making things instantly better. He was a very unique person.  His family was his pride and joy. He had a bond like no other with his children. He held his wife up on a pedal stool.  He was an example of a perfect husband, father, grandfather, brother in-law, Uncle, Great Uncle, Son In-law and friend.  He gave us enough laughs to last us a lifetime. Thanks for the memories my dear sweet brother in-law. Thanks for always being there.  You earned your wings and the wings of a 1000 other’s!  I’m pretty sure you, Dad and Uncle Allen are getting into some kind of mischief up there. Is that possible heaven?

Although, as an adult, I haven't really been around Joe's family, I was saddened to see and hear in the recent months that he and his family were having to fight such a nasty disease.  As a child, I remember Joe being an outgoing, funny, loving and caring dad to his kids and the other children he influenced.  Joe and his family showed many people in this community the meaning of putting others first and serving others, and that will be remembered by many, young and old.  My thoughts are with your family as you find peace in time.

I don't know why bad things happen to such good people, but I do know that on Thursday the world lost one of the best men I have ever known. I struggled with the words to express how important my uncle Joe was to my family, and to me, because it just doesn't seem like there are enough words to express how great of a person he was and what he meant to so many people; no amount of words could do it justice. my uncle was always the go -to person, and so very giving of his time, never expecting anything in return. His giving personality and his sense of humor will always be missed and never fully replaced. But, the great thing about my uncle is that he left us all with sooooooo many wonderful memories. (like linking arms and forcing me to skip with him through WalMart on black Friday) At times we will be mad about the way this turned out, we will feel sad, but even though he was taken from us, the memories he left will last us forever. I was able to grow up seeing how my uncle Joe treated my aunt, and therefore gain expectations for how a husband should treat his wife (good luck measuring up Devin)  my uncle was a irreplaceable uncle. My wedding in May will not be the same without you, but you'll be in my heart that day, and every day after that. Let us just remember that he wouldn't want us to be so sad, but instead laugh about the fun times. I love you Uncle Joe, and you will be missed by so many people.

Joe Smith. While the name Joe Smith may sound common and familiar, I mean - who doesn't know a Joe or a Smith? This man was far from common.

My uncle Joe loved life. He loved his family fiercely.

If you were 16 and hit the gas instead of the brake, which then sent a giant McDonald's trash can through the giant McDonald's parking lot fence, he loved hopping in his truck to run over and help you. If you were home alone and heard the mouse trap go off and were frozen in terror, knowing, there is NO possible way you can get off the chair until the mousey corpse is gone? What do you do? You call Uncle Joe, at night, it doesn't matter what time it is, and he hops in his truck, drives to your house, and gets rid of it for you. Maybe you finally went away to college and while living in an apartment with other poor, broke, college students, you write a nice dramatic email to your family about your bare cupboards. Guess who drives 2 hours one way with his wife, in the snow, to bring you more food than you can fit in your cupboards? Guess who also beams with pride because when you open your fridge, he realizes all you have in it is some alcohol?

Uncle Joe.

These few acts of services aren't why we love Uncle Joe so much. They are just a few personal examples of how he lived his life. Fully, selflessly, and joyfully. He pulled your ass out onto a dance floor, he made you laugh, and if you paid attention to how he treated his wife and his family, he raised the expectations you have for the men in your life.

My God, Uncle Joe. We will miss you so much.

I promise to keep a little booze in my fridge, to haul my ass out onto a few more dancefloors, and to try to enjoy the rest of my days on this Earth as much as you enjoyed yours.

Thank you for everything. I love you.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Mr. Joseph Smith. The loss of a loved one is one of the hardest and most difficult things to deal with, but we don't have to do it alone. God really cares for us (Isaiah 41:10). He even promises a time when death will be completely gone forever! (1 Corinthians 15:26). How loving our Heavenly Father is!

My deepest condolences,

Iyana
