Donald D. “Don” Smith age 85, of Caldwell, OH passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 6, 1932 in Everettsville, WV a son of the late Charles Jess & Mary Edna Willey Smith.
Don served and protected his country in the US Marines during the Korean War. He retired from the US Postal Service following 31 years of service. He had served as the Sarahsville Postmaster and went on to become a rural mail carrier. He had enjoyed 30 years of retirement. Don was a member of the Olive Lodge #210 F & AM and the American Legion Post #888.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Marie Humphrey Smith, who passed in 1975; longtime companion Bethel Jones Smith, who passed in 2017; son Paul Smith, daughter Patricia Smith Steed; granddaughter Heather Smith Brocklehurst; 3 sisters Mary Ellen Kiggans, Ruth Bates, and Mable Smith; 5 brothers Chuck, Ray, Bill, Wilbur, and Paul Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory are 2 sons Ron (Ruth) Smith of Caldwell and Terry (Kay) Smith of Bethesda, OH; daughter Donna Kress of Fulda, OH and companion Eugene Hardesty; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends for visitation Friday, January 12, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Larry Copley officiating. Burial will follow in Village View Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the Noble County Veteran Services.
