Barbara J. Gruber

Barbara J. Gruber age 90, of Summerfield, OH formerly of Indian Trail, NC passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020 at the Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, OH. She was born September 7, 1929 in Erie, PA a daughter of the late John Jenks Sr. and Josephine Condry Miller.

She earned her Registered Nursing Degree from the St. Lukes Hospital in Cleveland, OH in 1952, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Villa Marie College in Erie in 1953 and earned a Master of Education & Gerontology Degree from the Kent State University in 1971. She served as a Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia for several years. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, National Gerontological Nurses Association, and the Virginia Association of Aging. She was a member of the St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Indian Trail, NC.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Daniel G. Gruber whom she married September 1, 1951 and who passed away October 4, 2015; siblings James C. Miller, Johns J. Miller Jr., and Patricia Shultze.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Kathleen (Michael) Archer of Summerfield, OH, Philip M. (Patty) Gruber of Indian Trail, NC, Eric Gruber of Richmond, VA, Peter Brian (Tearsa) Gruber of New Providence, PA, and Laura (Bob) Allen of Columbus, OH; grandchildren Brian, Kevin, Allan, Adam, Philip, Michael, Emily, Genavive, Kate, Lydia, Daniel, Andrew, Elisha, Rachel, Vanessa, and Mykyla; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Francis J. “Chris” (Vel) Miller of Tennessee. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Cremation will be observed and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Michael Catholic Church in Carlisle, OH Saturday, January 18, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Father Wayne Morris serving as celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Chandler Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724 has been entrusted to care for the family.
