Joseph E. “Joe” Smith age 52, of Caldwell passed away peacefully at home Thursday January 23, 2014 surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous 10 month battle with cancer. He was born August 5, 1961 in Guernsey County, Ohio a son of the late Ross B. and Dorothy McKee Smith.
Joe will always be remembered as a very loving, hardworking, and devoted family man who loved to smile and laugh. He was very active volunteering in his community as a T-Ball Coach, 4-H Advisor and a member of the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department. He was the former president of the Noble County 4-H Council and was a member of the Caldwell Exempted Village School Board. Joe was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns Fan.
Joe enjoyed his work as a truck driver for the Noble County Highway Department for 23 years. He also liked being outside filling his bird feeders, planting sunflowers with his granddaughter, Raegan, and maintaining his lawn to perfection. As a father, Joe seldom missed an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren in all their activities.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law Gary Stack and a niece Jennifer Hickman.
He was loved and will be missed by his family, wife of 33 years, Louise Stack Smith, whom he married June 7, 1980; 1 daughter Heather (Sean) Frizzell of Cumberland; 1 son Joseph “Joey” (Sherry) Smith of Shadyside; 4 grandchildren Raegan, Abe, Samantha and Gwyn; 1 sister Barbara Smith of Cambridge; 1 brother David Smith of Cambridge; mother-in-law Marilyn (Dave) Carsey of Caldwell; 2 sisters-in-law, Lori (Larry) Askew of Strasburg and Lisa (Danny) Leasure of Caldwell. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends will be received Monday January 27, 2014 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West Street, Caldwell, OH 43724. A funeral service will be held Tuesday January 28, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Aaron Bounds Officiating. Burial will follow in Olive Cemetery in Caldwell.
